This was my introduction at the first National Biochar Conference in Boulder, CO on August 9-12, 2009.  Here is the basic arguement: because global warming is difficult to regulate and the cost of mitigating emissions in different sectors of the economy is variable, offsets provide an important flexibility to cap-and-trade systems that enable them to support concepts like biochar.
